Tackers (for Kids )Many of the 80 yacht clubs throughout Victoria conduct sailing activities for kids. Nearly half of the clubs are accredited Yachting Australia Training Centres and only use qualified instructors and comply with the safety programs, standards and course guidelines provided by Yachting Australia. Accredited training centres offer kids the "Get Into Small Boat Sailing Course" which comes in five progressive modules. The first three combine to provide kids with a basic introduction before they move onto the last two modules that are about "better sailing". Kids who participate in these courses also receive "log" books to record their progress and a nationally recognised certificate on completion. Once kids have completed the basic introduction course they are able to join in club activities including introductory racing. They can then progress with the careful support of club members to the various types of sailing and boat that interest them. They may chose to crew for someone else rather than sail the boat themselves. A limited number of Clubs in Victoria are also developing Tackers – a program designed to provide kids with a fun and safe experience, from the age of 7 through to the end of primary school. Tackers starts with a 3 hour introductory experience, consisting of two 1 ½ hour sessions, where kids are given a number of sailing and boating experiences to ensure their safety, knowledge and confidence on the water before progressing to the Get Into Small Boat Sailing courses outlined above.
