Crewing and Twilight Sailing
Twilight racing is usually held on weeknights during daylight saving time. Sailing clubs conduct races and times may vary but often people start getting ready at 5.00pm for a 6.00pm start. The boats race for an hour or so and are often back by 7.30pm. After the race the sailors often congregate at the clubhouse for a casual barbeque or dinner and social activities.
This type of racing is usually for keelboats that are kept on a mooring or at a marina as opposed to dinghies that sail off the beach and are kept on a trailer. A keelboat has a weighted keel under the hull, which prevents it capsizing. Keelboats come in all shapes and sizes and are often sailed by a number of people.
Twilight racing is good for beginners because the races are shorter and often less serious than the Saturday or Sunday competition. Boats often need crew because regulars get tied up with work and can't make it to the club in time for the race. Skippers are willing to take on inexperienced hands to assist the sailing of the boat.
